Artist Statement

The painting portion is created in conversation with the structure of the drawing portion. I imagine the drawing to represent the parts of our personality that are handed down to us—the skeleton that our experience engages with. The paint is our personality’s creative realm, which defines itself and exercises control—our will.

We are cities, in the sense that we are multifaceted and diverse. We’re a family of features and traits, some inherited, some self-made. Like cities, we are layered with history, yet constantly evolving. As we build upon the foundation given to us, we carve out new spaces of meaning, redefining who we are while honouring the structures that shaped us. The balance between creation and inheritance is what makes us both built and builders—dynamic, incomplete, and endlessly complex.
